How to Become An IAS Step By Step

To become an IAS officer one needs to qualify for the civil services examination conducted by the UPSC every year. In this blog we will understand the whole process step by step to became a IAS Officer:

Pass 12th Class from Any Subject:-

 The very first step for becoming an IAS officer is to clear your 12th examinations from any specific stream be it science, commerce, or arts.

Complete Graduation in Any Course:-

As soon as you pass your12th examination after that you will have to complete your graduation/degree in whatever subject you are interested in, only then you can sit for the civil service exam.

After your graduation is completed, you can apply for the UPSC exam, or if you want you can also apply in the final year of your graduation. As soon as you apply for the UPSC exam, after that, you have to clear 3 main exams, the first one is the Preliminary Exam followed by the mains exam and the last one is the interview.

Preliminary Exam:-

After applying for UPSC Exam now you have to clear the first exam which is called Preliminary Exam, it consists of two papers and both contain objective-type questions i.e. two papers with four options will be of 200-200 each. To qualify for the next round you have to clear this exam.

Mains Exam:-

There are a total of 9 papers in the mains exam out of which the marks of 7 papers are added to the final score and 2 papers are only for qualifying. In this, all the questions are descriptive, the duration of which is 3 hours. To qualify in Paper A, 25% of marks have to be obtained while to qualify in Paper B, 30% of marks have to be obtained.

In this, your score is determined out of a total of 1750 marks.

Interview:-

As soon as both your exams are cleared, after that now you are called for a personal interview round which is about 45 minutes there are many panelists who ask very difficult and tricky questions for which you have to be ready and you’ll have to clear this round as well only then you will be able to become an IAS officer.

Training:-

For IAS training, you’ll have to go to the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration (LBSNAA), which is located in Mussoorie (Uttarakhand).

In IAS training, there is a foundation course for the first 3 months, under which you are made to do some special physical and mental activity. Apart from this, a civil service officer has to stay in the village for 7 days to better understand the life and problems of the village.

Professional training of an IAS officer begins after the foundation training. During this training, information about every sector of administration and governance is given. In this, famous experts and senior officials of the country come to take classes. 

After the completion of training, you are posted as an IAS Officer.
