The Making and Journey of IIIT Hyderabad
A dream college for many aspiring students in India, IIIT Hyderabad, which is ranked amongst the top 6 Universities in South Asia with respect to research papers by Cybermetric Lab, is a coveted institute for information technology.
Founded as a not-for-profit public private partnership in 1998, the International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad (IIIT-H) is the first IIIT in India under the framework. The journey of the institution was enriched with commencement of inter-disciplinary research programs in various fields with a specialisation in technology and applied research. IIIT-H stands out as a higher education establishment as it offers research driven curricula right from the undergraduate level which enables students to be inclined towards research and innovation.
Unlike other universities which are organized into departments, IIITH was planned as a congregation of research laboratories and centers. Most notably, the institute has world renowned tech companies like Apple, Microsoft, Google, and Philips registered with it for its placement drive, Apple Inc. being the latest to scout for techies in the college.
A Step Ahead of Conventional Mediums for Imparting Technical Knowledge
IIIT-H’s mission is to contribute to revolutionising industry and society by the means of research oriented learning methods. As a result of its unique beyond-the-classroom teaching, IIIT-H hosts the biggest academic research groups in India that work in Natural Language Processing, Information Extraction, Speech and Computer Vision.
It is only natural that IIITH’s teaching methods are more than classroom and laboratory learning. Intensive hands-on experience and research opportunities are enabled by workshops, symposiums, short courses, summer schools, talks, and conferences that are the definite answer to how the institute imparts education.
IIIT-H offers a range of technical and non-technical courses in terms of unconventional teaching. Since contributing to society in a positive manner is a mission, there is consistency in the number of workshops that are conducted on innovation in social computing for environmental issues like urban safety, disaster preparedness and resistance. Additionally, there is a great leap in the variety of summer school courses and workshops offered for fields that have immense currency and usage-Artificial Intelligence, Deep Learning, and Data Analytics. The nature of workshops can be foundational as well as intermediate depending on the level of knowledge. Some workshops are special in the context of providing up to date information on advances.
“DISHA”, Deep-Tech Student Startup Programme is one such summer resident programme offered by IIIT-H foundation to help students build the next big deep-tech startup. The zeal to tap brightest minds in IT has also led IIIT-H to tap into the age-group of 12-15 years, culminating into a non-residential School Outreach Program. Furthermore, the prestigious Centre for Visual Information Technology at IIIT-Hyderabad workshops offers a summer course on Deep Learning for Computer Vision.
