In a boast to the IIT, IISc research projects, the centre will now provide Rs70,000 as monthly fellowship to researchers. These researchers must be doing their PhDs in Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) or Indian Institute of Science (IISc). This was informed by Union higher education secretary Kewal Kumar Sharma.
Highlights of the Scholarship
Presently researcher-students get Rs25,000 as monthly scholarship at IITs. “As part of the research fellowship scheme of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, we wish the meritorious students who are being forced to leave the country for purely financial reasons stay within the country. We will provide 2,000 such monthly fellowships across the IIT system and IISc Bengaluru,” said the Higher Education Secretary.
Sharma made the announcement at the 67th Foundation Day of IIT Kharagpur at its Kharagpur campus in West Midnapore district. It will be given for a period of five years. This will also enable meritorious researchers, keen to further their research but forced to opt for corporate jobs for higher pay, to pursue their goal, he said.
“However, the scholarship recipients can’t do any other job,” said the senior official. “The cabinet nod for the proposal should come soon. We are hopeful to start it from the next session,” he said.
IIT-KGP director Partha Pratim Chakrabarti hailed it as a good proposal.
The Meritorious IIT, IISc
There are 23 IITs in the country right now and an Indian Institute of Science, which is based on Bengaluru. Premier IITs and IISc Bengaluru always get ranked among the best educational institutes.

Job cuts in Indian I.T. companies will be 1.75 -2 lakh per year in next 3 years, due to under- preparedness in adapting newer technologies hence it is better to invest money right now and be prepared for the future jobs, rather than thinking of R.O.I of the certification program. Although, as mentioned, due to lack of skilled individuals, people equipped with these skills can charge a premium in terms of salary.

If you are in the I.T. industry, get started in new domains which can lead to employability. Furthermore, just knowing the basics isn’t going to cut it. People need to establish themselves as authority in their chosen field and have expertise in it.
Furthermore, the Trump administration has been cited as one of the major reasons behind the layoffs. It won’t be right to blame Trump, for he has fulfilled the election promise of giving jobs to local people including IT professionals by tightening H1-B visa norms, which were being misused by companies by paying less to foreign professionals working in US. It is for companies to tackle the situation, and such situation they have undergone in previous years. It is not new for them. They know to tide over it or at least this time, need to learn how to tackle such situations.
IT entrance: Total Online Exam from 2018
IT Entrance Examination at designated centres, no use of pen and paper
The entrance examination for the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) will go completely online from 2018. This has been decided but the Joint Admission Board (JAB) recently. The JAB, which is the policy-making body on IIT admissions, took the decision at a meeting in Chennai.
IIT-Madras’ Director and Chairman of JAB 2017, Prof Bhaskar Ramamurthi said, “It has been decided that the JEE (Advanced) will be conducted in online mode from 2018 onwards. Further information regarding the examination will be provided by the JAB in due course.”
“In order to make logistics and evaluations easier it was decided today that the JEE-Advanced should be made online. The concept was being discussed for many years, but it was necessary to have adequate infrastructure to conduct the exam online,” a JAB member said.
WHAT IS JEE MAINs
The JEE-Mains is the entrance examination for admission to engineering courses offered across the country. It is a qualifying exam for JEE-Advanced which is required for admission to the prestigious IITs and NITs. More than 13 lakh students took the JEE-Mains this year, with less than 10 per cent of them going online. Around 2.2 lakh students were eligible to write the JEE (Advanced).
Earlier Major Changes in JEE Pattern
Ministry of Human Resource Development notified two major changes in the JEE pattern for 2017
1. Firstly–no weightage for the 12th class marks in calculating the ranks in the JEE (Main) examination
2. Secondly for candidates whose admissions are based on the JEE (Advanced)/JEE(Main) ranks, they should have secured at least 75% marks in the 12th class examination, or be in the top 20 percentile in the 12th class examination conducted by the respective Boards.
3. For SC/ST students the qualifying marks would be 65% in the 12th class examination
Centre to establish separate board for ITI
Cheer and a reason for much joy for around 23 lakh students graduating from over 13,000 Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) across the country. They may soon be awarded certificates equivalent to the ones given to ICSE and CBSE Board pass-outs.
Yes, you read it right. A proposal for the establishment of a separate board benchmarked with the quality standards of CBSE and ICSE has been accepted by the HRD ministry. It was was mooted by the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship.
HRD MINISTRY’S PLANS
“First time we have decided. And to much appreciation the HRD ministry is on the same page, that we are going to establish a Board for a certification of equivalence of CBSE and ICSE to all these 2.3 million students (in ITIs),” Union Skill Development and Entrepreneurship Minister Rajiv Pratap Rudy announced at a press gathering in New Delhi.
He said the ministry was working in the direction to establish a national board. This was being done so that exams all over the country are conducted on the pattern involving 70% practical and 30% elective subjects.
Rudy asserted that industrial training institutes (ITIs) will come up like CBSE and ICSE schools in the days to come. He further said that the ministry has completely revamped their infrastructural requirements and syllabus.
HRD MINISTRY’S MOTTO
The minister informed that a figure of 2.5% skilled workforce in India has been put out by the National Sample Survey Organisation (NSSO). Rudy asserted that it was “not true” since there were many areas which have not been captured while arriving at the outcome. Thus more needs to be done. And for this Rudy said that the ministry was looking at the services sector “in a big way”. The ministry is working towards skilling its workforce to meet the demands of the industry.
